Healthy Orange Chicken

Healthy Orange Chicken

Healthy Orange Chicken is baked and not fried. Sticky Sweet Orange Sauce tastes like Panda Express Orange Chicken, but so much better for you!  Classic Orange Chicken is a Chinese-American fast food dish consisting of diced fried chicken breast pieces topped with a sticky-sweet orange sauce.

While orange has its die-hard fans (including my husband), it can also be very sweet. The fast-food group definitely doesn’t win any food awards.

But if you put a plate near me in today’s healthy orange chicken recipe? I promise there will be no leftovers!

It tastes better, better to you, and is less expensive than the orange chicken [Chicken Burger].

This skinny orange chicken is quick and easy to make. You will not regret leaving delivery and making this homemade version.

Instead of OMG what did you just do? The feelings of regret she may have felt when she squeezed the bottom of a white cardboard container for delivery, she will be thrilled to eat a large portion of this light recipe tonight.

In the unlikely event that you have leftovers, you’ll need to repeat them tomorrow as well.

Like many of my other healthy snacks, this recipe keeps the spirit of the dish alive, but serves it in a more informative way (this Teriyaki Beef Stir Fry recipe is my new favorite).

You’ll find the distinctive orange chicken sauce and crispy orange chicken layer, but the chicken is baked, not fried.

Since we’re preheating the oven and need a side dish to serve with our homemade orange chicken anyway, why not take note of this shrimp and broccoli tab and toss a head of broccoli on the tray next to the chicken while you cook. bake?

Cooking chicken and broccoli on the side is a two-for-one dynamite method that this family plans to revisit the next busy days of the week (I also enjoy using broccoli in Crockpot Beef and Broccoli).

The secret to the best healthy orange chicken

The secret to the best orange chicken is in the sauce!

Instead of orange chicken with marmalade and brown sugar (which is about two rounds of sugar), this orange chicken sauce is made with just a few healthy ingredients. She has loosely based it on a delicious and healthy Orange Crockpot Chicken.

The most important ingredient is real orange juice and orange peel.

You can’t beat the taste of fresh orange. It makes chicken taste tart, sweet (but not too sweet), and delicious sticky fast food, only better.

You can buy orange chicken sauce, but it’s usually packed with preservatives and sugar. Once you taste the fresh taste of orange chicken sauce from scratch, you wont want to go back to using the packaged sauce.

How to make orange chicken from scratch

Are you ready for the Panda Express Orange Chicken flavor, with fewer calories and without the mess than a deep fryer? This is what you need.

The ingredients Healthy Orange Chicken

For crispy baked chicken

chicken breast. Since we bake chicken instead of frying it, this orange chicken is good for you. Once baked, the chicken becomes the perfect combination of crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

I used boneless, skinless chicken breasts, but you can also try this as an orange chicken thighs recipe.

Panko bread crumbs.Whole wheat panko crumbs are the best way to help you shred chicken without frying it. It also soaks up the sauce and gives the chicken nuggets their sticky texture.

green onion. One of my favorite additions to stir fry recipes. They balance the sweetness of the sauce and bring freshness and color to the dish.

For homemade chicken orange sauce

Orange flavor + juice. The key to the fresh and bright orange flavor. The best part: both ingredients can come in the same orange (winner!).

honey. Instead of using refined sugar in this recipe, I added honey. It gives the orange sauce its distinctive sweetness while keeping the recipe on the healthy side.

soy sauce. A star ingredient in almost all stirrers. Soy sauce is a tasty and salty addition to the sweetness of orange and honey.

Ginger + garlic. Dream team with an Asian flavor!

Corn starch + water. Makes a cornstarch mixture to help thicken the sauce.

Red pepper flakes. The orange chicken isn’t spicy on its own, so I sprinkled it with red pepper flakes for a little heat. Add as much or as little as you like to achieve your desired level of spice.

Broccoli Preparation: Place the broccoli on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with oil, salt and pepper. Stir to coat, then spread an even layer on one side of the pan.

Chicken Preparation: Put the breadcrumbs, salt and pepper in a large zip-lock bag. Shake a little to build up. Add the chicken pieces, close and beat to coat the chicken evenly. Lay the chicken pieces in a single layer on the open side of the baking sheet.

Add the baked chicken to a saucepan and stir until coated with the sauce.

If the broccoli is still not crisp as you’d like, spread it over the entire surface of the pan (including the open side.

where you were roasting the chicken previously) and return it to the oven until it is baked as desired (let it sit for another 3 minutes). Stir the green onions in the pot with the chicken. Serve hot with broccoli and toasted rice.
